Bone Density Scan (DEXA Scan)

Understanding your bone health

A bone density scan, also known as a DEXA scan, helps assess bone strength and identify the risk of osteoporosis and bone fractures.

This scan can help detect weakening bones early, allowing treatment and lifestyle changes to reduce the risk of future fractures.

Bone density scans are funded under the Life Stages Benefit for:

  • Women aged 65 years and older
  • Men aged 75 years and older

Members below the qualifying age may still have access to a bone density scan through their available radiology benefits, subject to benefit limits.

Routine screening is generally not recommended unless there are significant risk factors present.

A bone density scan may be considered if you have risk factors such as:

  • Previous bone fractures
  • Frequent falls
  • Long-term corticosteroid use
  • Family history of hip fractures
  • Smoking
  • High alcohol intake
  • Early menopause without hormone replacement treatment
  • History of cancer or chemotherapy
  • Kidney disease or kidney failure
  • Low body weight or BMI

To be considered for funding under the Life Stages Benefit, the following may be required:

  • A motivation letter from your treating healthcare provider
  • Clinical information supporting the request
  • Alignment with the Scheme’s age and risk guidelines

Why bone density testing matters

Bone density testing plays an important role in identifying osteoporosis early and helping prevent future fractures.

Alliance-MidMed aims to ensure that access to this benefit is clinically appropriate and based on each member’s health needs and risk factors.

Routine screening is available every three years, with the benefit and funding source depending on age. Additional or more frequent testing may be covered where clinically appropriate and subject to Scheme approval.

Prescribed oral contraceptives are covered from the acute benefit. IUD funding depends on the clinical reason and applicable Scheme criteria.

All beneficiaries have access to two routine dental consultations per year, approximately six months apart.

A family history of cancer?

If you have a family history of breast or prostate cancer, speak to the Alliance-Midmed clinical team for guidance on appropriate prevention and screening.

Preventative benefits may be subject to Scheme criteria, clinical guidelines, managed care protocols and available benefits.
